spices help warm your smoothie up!

Brrrrr, it’s starting to get chilly out there, which means a vibrant, nutrient-rich smoothie may not sound so good.

But what if you could have all the yumminess,  health benefits AND convenience of a smoothie and not be left shivering and unsatisfied.

Well, allow me to introduce the “winter smoothie”. The winter smoothie uses ingredients that may be a little denser than your light summertime smoothie. The winter smoothie never uses ice, but instead uses spice! The winter smoothie uses secret immune boosters to help keep you sniffle free all season long.

So if you love healthy fast food as much as I do, read on for how you can give your smoothie a winter makeover.

How to winterize  your smoothie is 6 simple steps:

Fatten up. That’s right, adding healthy fats to your smoothie can create  luxurious mouth experience that helps insulate you from winter cold. Winter is not the time for a low fat diet, but it is also not the time to overindulge and feel like a bloated penguin. : ) With good fats like almonds and almond milk, avocado, coconut oil and coconut milk, you will be well on your way to looking and feeling a like winter goddess instead.

Spice is nice. Adding spices to your smoothie adds a whole new dimension of flavor and health benefits. Spices help warm things up, aid in digestion, can boost metabolism, increase immunity and stimulate circulation to give you a winter glow! Try cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, anise, cloves, black pepper, turmeric, cayenne, fennel, coriander and even curry. Keep it simple and experiment a little bit.

Not just for smell. Therapeutic grade essential oils can add an exotic depth to your smoothie. Oils in the citrus family like grapefruit, orange, tangerine and lemon can be especially nice at this time of year because they boost mood and provide concentrated vitamin C and antioxidants to ward off winter colds. Be sure to use ONLY pure, unadulterated oils for internal purposes. Do not buy just any oil. The only brand I work with for internal use is Young Living. To learn more or to order visit youngliving.us and use customer code 904207.

Add heat. When the weather is cold outside it is not a good idea to introduce cold food or drink into the body. It halts digestion (meaning you get digestive issues, low energy and fat storage), can make you spacey and unfocused, and just makes your body have to work that much harder to keep body temperature up. This is one of the many reasons I like the Vita-Mix Blender because it can gently heat whatever your blending when you keep it going for more than 2 minutes. Try a warm almond butter, cacao, almond milk, cinnamon and banana smoothie and you will feel like you are having something decadently naughty for sure!

Skip the dairy. Besides the fact that pasteurized dairy causes mucus, allergies, hormonal imbalance, digestive issues and much more, it is cooling. Instead go for coconut milk, almond milk,  young coconut meat or hemp milk. Add an avocado or soaked almonds or cashew for thick richness.

Think outside of the box. Use some new and different winter ingredients like sweet potato, pumpkin, beets, almond butter and even cabbage. All of these are warming foods, so they support your body in the colder times. The orange veggies provide much needed beta-carotene to help boost immunity. See the Pumpkin Pie smoothie recipe below.

Winter Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

1 cup peeled, cubed raw sweet potato

1/2 an avocado, peeled and pitted

8 oz. fresh carrot juice

splash (or more) coconut or almond milk

small wedge green cabbage (optional, but you won’t taste it & you’ll get a great nutrient boost)

liquid stevia to taste (try 2 drops to start)

1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

pinch Celtic salt

Put everything but the avocado in the Vita-Mix Blender and blend on high until smooth. With the blender running, drop in the avocado and blend another 30 seconds. Enjoy with a little cinnamon sprinkled on top.

sisters on the beach

Playing with my "sisters" during our photo shoot

About one month ago I took a BIG leap.

I mean big.

In one of the worst economic times since the great depression, I have continued to pour my heart and soul into a business I love.

And you know what?

We’re growing.

How can it be that businesses small and large are folding all over the place, yet a holistic health business can prosper?

Well, it comes back to that big leap.

About 2 months ago, I followed my heart and my passion and invested in a program that I knew would support me and my business in ways I could not even imagine.

Now, my rational self said,

“Are you crazy???”

“How much do you want to spend on this program?”

“Where will you get the money?”

And on and on . . .

But you know what I did?

I got out of my own way.

I allowed my intuition to guide me, and allowed my trust that everything works out perfectly to push me forward.

So I said “yes” to myself and to my vision even in the face of what seemed like a crazy decision . . .

And I am so glad I did.

You see the program has only just begun, and I have already received transformation and value like I never could have imagined. My energy is better, my body seems to be growing younger, my relationships have improved and my business is thriving.

That is the beauty of jumping in when you hear the calling; of following your gut instinct or  your heart; of making YOU important – no matter what your doubt demons or other people say.

Because the truth is, unconsciously they may not want you to grow or be successful or get healthy. If you stay as you are, even if you are unhappy, that is what is comfortable to others (and to you).

So, I am here to give you that gentle nudge and say

“If not now, when?”

“If not you, who?”

Life is too short to play small.

Life is too short to not taste the nectar that exists just outside your comfort zone.

I may not be an economist or expert investor, but I can confidently say that the absolute BEST investment you can ever make is in  YOU.

There is no joy in a body that is sick.

Wealth cannot be fully enjoyed in a state of illness or pain.

It is literally impossible to live your passion when you don’t have enough energy to just get through the day . . .

I often see the trepidation in my prospective clients eyes, and I have had that same trepidation myself, but I have never had a client turn around and say to me “God, I wish I hadn’t invested in myself, what a waste.”

Quite the opposite. They usually gush that they would have paid any amount to achieve the health, clarity and joy they reach at the end of their programs.

Likewise, the more I am willing to invest in myself, the more I see flow to me in return.

When you have health, when you glow, when you are out of pain, when you have energy, when your moods are balanced, when your skin and eyes are clear and bright, when you have body confidence . . . you literally attract better relationships, opportunities, career possibilities and resources.

I am a true believer in the law of attraction as I witness how it works in my own life and the lives of others.

Be what you want before it is actually manifest, and it will come quickly.

It takes faith, but it works.

Connecting to my "true self" in Santa Monica

Because of my “big leap” I found my true self while on retreat with 9 other powerful women and our very powerful “leader”, Rose Cole.

Nothing is more valuable than this.

As powerful women in this program we have been “upping our game” with holistic nutrition, personal exploration, cleansing and more.

All in the name of shining our light in the brightest way possible to be of service in a bigger way.

I can’t tell you how amazing the experience of real investment has been, but I wanted to share a bit about this with you in order to show  you that anything IS possible . . .

That you ARE worth it . . .

That you have a bright light to shine . . .

You just need to start honoring your body as the temple that it is.

Don’t be afraid to invest in yourself, after all, you are really all you have.

If you feel ready to take a big leap and invest in your future in a big way, I invite you to apply for one of just 3 spots available through the rest of the year for my Private Platinum Health Coaching Retreat. This intensive is by application only. I just spent 3 magical days and nights filled with yoga, music and nature . . . and not a whole lot of sleep. Although I had fun beyond my expectations, the high energy of riding on adrenaline is stressful to the body – even when it is good stress.

When tougher times hit, or you become so busy your head spins, the stress can be compounded by difficult emotions or extra mental and physical demands.

Stress is stress and, if you are alive and breathing, it is also inevitable. You can’t avoid it, so you might as well learn the secrets to surviving and thriving, right?

Over the many years (and many stresses), I have discovered some fantastic and super simple ways to create resilience. And a resilient body is a stress-proof body.

Does this mean you can be immune to stress completely? No, but it means you can bounce back with energy, and really get the most out of your life without constantly being in recovery mode and feeling like you are a victim of life, or like you have been hit by a truck.

When stress-proofing your body, I believe in the holistic model, which means addressing all aspects of you – body, mind, emotions, spirit.

In this article, I want to begin with your foundation – your physical body.

Below are 3 simple steps to creating a rock solid physical foundation.

1. Eat Well

This is a huge piece of the resilience pie. If you are eating processed, chemicalized, dry (no water content), nutrientless, packaged or fast food, you are way overdrawn in your resilience bank.

This is like putting Kool-Aid in your gas tank and expecting your car to run well, if at all. With this image in mind, it becomes a little easier to see how what you put into your body can have a bigger effect than you thought.

So, what are stress-proofing foods? Well, generally these are brightly colored plant foods, organic whenever possible, full of water, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Whenever I include more of these in my diet particularly in easy ways like green smoothies, vegetable juices and salads, my body bounces back from set-backs  in ways that astound me.

Yes, you need protein, fats, and good carbohydrates, but fresh (raw) plant foods actually have these in them. Leafy greens are especially potent stress-busting foods. So, by putting emphasis on abundant veggies and some high octane fruit like berries, you have your bases covered way more than if you rely on a bag of pretzels.

2. Move Freely

Another piece to the physical part of resilience is moving. We are not just brains, we are bodies that have a brain. In modern day living it can be easy to live above the neck and wonder why our bodies are breaking down.

You need to give your body love. And one of the ways you give it love is to move it!

Moving your body also has a way of connecting you to a sense of peace, purpose and inspiration. I often find that my moments of greatest inspiration are during or after movement – especially if I am in nature.

Your body loves to move, I promise. So dance, walk, run, climb, wiggle, stretch, garden, bike, swim – enjoy your amazing body. When you start to enjoy and use your body, immunity increases, blood flows, toxins are released, good hormones are triggered. Find what you love and do it!

3. Relax Often

Moving is soooo important, and so is relax time. One of the reasons I love yoga so much is because it is really quite an efficient practice. It exercises the body, but it also includes relaxation, spiritual connection, calming the mind, oxygenation, detoxification and immune system support. This is a big part of why I was able to get away with less sleep while on my 3 day trip – because I was doing so much yoga!

If you are pushing, pushing, pushing, you need to find time to relax. This is the time when our body repairs and restores. If you can get some bites of relaxation in everyday, you will find your body getting more and more stress-proof.

Body resilience is really a beautiful thing. It means less sick days, depression, fatigue and even weight gain, and more vitality, joy, health and lightness.

In yoga there is a law that states: “where attention goes energy flows“.

So, whatever you are present to is what is fed, what flowers, what grows.

This can be applied to just about any area of your life.

But what I want to focus on here is how presence relates to your metabolism, energy, digestion and your health.

First, let’s just look at what presence is and how it works.

It has been scientifically proven that we can affect anything simply by observing it and paying attention to it. You can affect another’s behavior by observing them.

We might call this self-consciousness, but this phenomenon has also been shown in animals, planets and more.

You may have even noticed for yourself that when you are in nature, observing the beauty around you, that you experience an almost immediate sense of relaxation and well being.

Well, this emotional responsiveness to what we put our attention on also relates to our body and to our metabolism.

When you eat with awareness and really fully choose presence with your meals, research has shown that you actually assimilate more nutrients, digest better and boost your metabolism.

Digestion, in fact, begins in the head! Wow!

Now, you may be saying “big deal, I don’t have time for this”, or “I don’t really care”.

Well, I encourage you to listen up because if you wish to maximize the nutrition from the food you eat, increase your energy, burn more calories without getting on the treadmill, get more enjoyment from your food and prevent overeating, this is THE tip you can start right away for profound results.

Without presence in the act of eating, you will experience less enzymatic action in the gut and be more likely to experience digestive problems (even if you don’t “feel” them), bowel disorders, lowered immunity, and fatigue. Not to mention you will most likely hold onto weight, have more difficulty losing excess weight AND overeat.

YIKES!

In order to take full advantage of the metabolic power of presence, you must give your full attention to eating. This means no TV, no reading, no computer, no eating while you work or while you drive. Be fully present.

Now, the slight exception to this would be eating in the presence of others. This is fine and even beneficial. Sharing a relaxed meal with family or friends is still supporting the attention being on your food and the act of eating.

Your Action Step:

For the next week be totally 100% present to your meals (and snacks). Remove all distractions and commit to this with your whole self.

Create a relaxing atmosphere alone or with others. If you are at work, step away from your desk.

Notice your food, smell it, look at it, really taste it, chew it, breath it.

Really make this a meditation.

Extra credit: Now if at some point during the week you choose to indulge in or binge on a “forbidden” food, be totally present.

DO NOT leave the building. Pay attention to what happens when you actually scoop the ice cream out of the container into a beautiful bowl, create a calm and comfortable environment and sit down, while enjoying it slowly.

If you are eating low quality ice cream, you will most likely put it down pretty quickly. : )

Even if you are eating the good stuff, you will most likely be satisfied with less.

This is not easy, I know, so be gentle with yourself.

I encourage you to try this, and please leave a comment below to let me know how it goes!

with love,

Ana

The single most important thing you can do everyday to effortlessly release weight (and keep it off), boost mood, balance hormones and support proper detoxification is to engage in daily “renewal rituals”.

Renewal rituals are activities that allow the body to release the negative energy and emotions from stress that actually build up in your body’s tissues. These are the emotions that leave you feeling depressed, anxious, craving sweets or junk, and holding onto fat.

If you don’t “process” these negative energies and stress build-ups, then your body will intuitively find another way. Nine times out of ten this involves seeking comfort from food (especially sugar and carbs), alcohol, cigarettes or other “drugs”.

Your body and brain are craving what I call a “rebooting”, and if you don’t provide the “renewal ritual” to clear the slate, you will find yourself emptying the cookie jar, ice cream container, bon bon box or whatever your comfort of choice might be.

The sugar will give a temporary lift, but then you will be back to square one, wanting more and more, and feeling horrible about yourself for your lack of “willpower”.

Over the course of the day our bodies, minds and spirits are like  sponges that soak up the messages, energies, emotions and psychic toxicity of all those around us. You may feel you do really well with your eating and self care until the end of the day when all self-control seems to go out the window. It’s not hunger or lack of willpower that knock you off the wagon. It’s stress!

A renewal ritual is something that connects you to your breath, body and soul. In holistic medicine, it is  known that when you connect to the soul or spirit, you release positive endorphins and reduce stress hormones. And excess stress hormones are what make your body hold onto fat and age more quickly.

I suggest you partake in a “renewal ritual” at least 1 time per day (ideally 2 times per day – morning and before dinner) since the endorphin boost lasts for only about 8 hours.

Your assignment:

Make sure to schedule some ME time for yourself daily.  Put it in your calendar, make it a priority. No one will do this for you, and yet you will be a better mother, employee, business owner, lover, friend, sister, basket weaver, whatever, if you commit to this ritual.

Try some meditation, Yoga, walking, deep breathing, prayer, dancing, bath time, tai chi, or whatever your spirit is calling for. Even just 5 minutes will do the trick, but 15 or 20 is even better.

48189148celery
Allow me to introduce one of my favorite foods: celery!
It really seems so humble, but I have found myself loving it more and more everyday. It is light, refreshing, has natural sodium and minerals (that we need), is great as a snack, in your salad, in your smoothie or soup. It is known as a wonderful cleansing and “diet” food because it is low in calories and high in fiber. In fact, you burn more eating and digesting it than you actually take in. I use it a lot as a digestive aid for “denser” foods like nut butters, nuts and seeds or chicken. The high enzyme content helps to digest these foods meaning less indigestion, but also less fat storage. And the minerals and protein in cashews, for example are much easier to digest when paired with some fresh stalks of celery.

Below are some excerpts from an article from NaturalNews.com by Sheryl Waters:
“Fresh, light green celery with glossy ribs is the best for eating. Celery is truly economical; all parts of the plant are edible and one cup contains only about twenty calories. There is no waste. It’s a great food and has a number of known health benefits.

Celery can provide a sense of calmness. It can also help lower blood pressure. People with gout should be fans of celery because it lowers uric acid.

Drinking fresh celery juice is said to reduce appetite. Taken before a meal it may help with weight loss.

People seldom think of celery as a real food in and of itself. In today’s culinary world, celery is used as a seasoning, a garnish or a snack, but Hippocrates considered it a medicine and recommended it for kidney health.

High in calcium and Vitamin C, celery should be a part of your daily diet. It is an excellent finger food and best when eaten raw. Avoid the large, fibrous bottom ends and for best flavor, store celery in a part of the refrigerator where it won’t freeze.”

I have encountered some people who find celery boring or lacking in flavor. My suggestion is to pair it with more flavorful items. Fill celery ribs with almond butter and pair with an apple for a wonderful snack. They can be used for dipping sticks with guacamole, salsa, egg salad or chicken salad. Other options include pairing with artichoke dip or tapenade.

If you are fortunate enough to have a high-speed blender, blend celery, apple and coconut water for a post workout electrolyte boost.
I have even processed celery, zucchini, cilantro and garlic in the Vita-Mix or food processor, then combined it with mashed avocado for a tasty veggi-guac dip or wrap filling.

Enjoy!
